Minutes of Local 356 Executive Meeting

December 13, 2007

Present:  President Mike Turner, 1st Vice-president Terry Goodwin, 2nd Vice-president James Hawkins, Treasurer Emily Trolley, Trustee Kathy Irwin, Chief Steward/Secretary Arne Mikkelsen.

 

Regrets:  Kathy Townsend (Steward at MGS/MTO Bancroft), Doug Jenkins (Steward, Haliburton Fire), Kent Hodgin (Steward Bancroft MNR), Don Hughes (Steward (HHFAU) MNR Bancroft)

 

  1. Meeting called to order at 6:15 p.m.

  1. Minutes of previous Executive meeting

(As per Local 356 Website)

MOTION (Hawkins/Goodwin) to adopt.  CARRIED

 

    1. Business Arising

($10,00000 to be transferred from bank account to a GIC.)

Treasurer Emily Trolley to call bank for an appointment next week.

 

3.      Correspondence

President Turner updated that there are two outstanding grievances for the local.

Secretary Arne Mikkelsen has received little correspondence most routine request for donations and an update package on our “Foster Care” child.

 

4.      Financial/Treasurer’s Report

Although a detailed financial report was not available, Treasurer Emily Trolley gave a general report on our account balance.  $22,564.52 balance in bank account including $2,252.48 Local Rebate from OPSEU. Emily has received the Semi-annual audit forms from OPSEU H.O. Arne will help her fill out for submission to Trustees (Kathy Irwin and Gayle Clements)

 

  1. Educationals / Training

President Turner attended the New Presidents workshop at OPSEU Head Office in Don Mills and received contact information and met OPSEU Staff.

2nd VP James Hawkins attended two educational during the year Steward I and Steward II, received good information on requirements of be a Steward and how to deal with grievances.

 

 

 

  1. Need for more Stewards

President Turner suggested there was a need for more Stewards in the local.  A discussion ensued regarding the classification of Stewards in the local (Because of the Local being a Composite Local all Stewards in Local 356 are elected as Unit Stewards so they may represent all members).  Steward, Kent Hodgin may be leaving Bancroft for a position in Peterborough.  Former Local Secretary Don Hughes is staying on as a Steward. Several names were discussed as potential candidates to become Stewards.

 

  1. Planning for next General Meeting

Date for the next General Meeting was set for Tuesday February 12, 2008.  This will be an important meeting as 2008 is the year for demand setting for new contract negotiations.

 

8.      Other business

    1. By-laws: Creation of Local By-Laws – need OPSEU President approval.  Also the honorarium for executives as voted on and approved in the last General Meeting of Local 356 – honorariums have to be in approved By-Laws.  (Arne Mikkelsen to send copy of Draft By-Laws to Executive)
    2. Property of Local 356:  there is a fax machine at Susan Kuiack’s residence.
    3. James Hawkins addressed the activities on the Local Website
